The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, July 19th, in reverence of the sacrifice of Qu Yuan, a patriotic Chinese poet who drowned himself seeing his government lose a battle. The festival is a re-enactment of boatmen racing in search of his body which was never found. People prepare the traditional savory zong zi, rice dumplings, on this day. You can find people offering zong zi to the fishes so that they keep away from eating Yuan’s body. The races are organized on lakes Dianshan and Zhujiajiao and many other parts of the country.
